A couple weeks back, our church hosted a really fun, well-attended dress-up party for ghosts and goblins and such. In the process of hotdogs and hayrides, we got to meet some folks from our community for the first time. As a faithful church member (who just happens to be the pastor), I encouraged them to join us in what we were doing…
And then it struck me; what if they ask ‘Why’?
Why should anyone, especially one who is unchurched, leave their home to trudge to the local church? Why should they get out of their pajamas, hunt something kind of clean to wear, make sure the kids are somewhat presentable, and make the effort to leave their warm homes with their beef stews starting in their crock pots?
Can we, as a church, answer that question clearly and with conviction?
They need to be part of a community. ‘Why?’
They need to be a part of something bigger than themselves. ‘Why?’
They need to understand their place in the world, especially in relationship to God. ‘Why?’
Is the Church showing the unchurched the answers to these ‘whys’?
Can we answer these questions with clarity?
